Muscle builders look at this seriously!

The maximum amount of muscle that can be added per week is two pounds.

Athletes often increase protein intake through increased food intake, or the use of protein powders under the belief that because the body builds muscle protein from amino acids, eating extra protein will stimulate muscle growth. However we already have seen in this unit and in unit 6 that that is false. The body can only build a certain amount of muscle each week (two pounds) and when excess protein is taken in, the amino acids cannot be stored, but rather will be converted to glucose or fat for storage. This is often the case because ultimately, an athlete who consumes adequate foods does not need the extra protein from supplements. The other thing to remember is that muscle growth is stimulated by physical activity, not excess protein.
